It has Rajesh Khanna in his debut role which he played as Vijay, alongside Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan. The film was adapted from the novel "Eye of the Needle" (1967) by Ken Follett and was the first Indian detective film to be based on a foreign novel. "Mera Naam Joker" was the other first Indian detective film which was based on a foreign novel. The film was also the first time Rajesh Khanna played the role of a detective, though he had previously starred in the 1968 film "Johny Mera Naam", that loosely depicted his future role as Vidya. Vijay (Rajesh Khanna) is a pickpocket who steals from wealthy people to give to poor people. He has two friends, Shyam (Jeevan) and Shankar (Suresh Oberoi). One day they decide to sit at a bar for some drinks. Unable to afford drinks, Vijay steals the wallet of a man sitting next to them. He finds a lottery ticket worth 1 lakh rupees in it. Aishwarya (Hema Malini), the lover of the owner of the wallet (Manmohan Krishna) then spots Vijay and takes his photo. Shankar, who was sitting with Vijay at that time, calls up Shankar’s brother Vinod, a police officer and tells him about the lottery ticket and asks him to put a watch on Aishwarya. Vinod informs Aishwarya about this by phone and tells her that he will come to meet her at her place for this matter. Meanwhile, Vijay returns to his place and tells his friend Shyam about the lottery ticket. Vijay goes to Aishwarya’s place to take the money. He takes the money along with him when he leaves, but accidentally drops it. He then goes back to Aishwarya’s house once again and tries to look for the cash in her cupboard, but she catches him and takes him to police station. There he confesses all that he had done. The police officer then sends him back home with Shankar. The next day Vijay is at Aishwarya’s house once again when she tells his mother about this incident again. Vijay realises his mistake and goes back to Aishwarya’s house and shows her the lottery ticket. She drives him to a police station and Vijay tries to steal the wallet again. But he fails again and is arrested. The officer tells him about his powers which is of telepathy, explaining that he can hear any conversation from anywhere in the world with a single thought.
